Owner-safe checklist

Record whether frost is on the evaporator, freezer compartment, door seal area, or after a long humid cooling run.
Shut the refrigerator down for normal defrosting when the manual calls for it and protect nearby surfaces from meltwater.
Do not force ice loose or accelerate defrosting with a heat source.
Call qualified service if ice returns quickly, the door will not seal, ammonia odor appears, or cooling remains poor after normal defrosting.
